EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954) [STONEHENGE.] Gouache maquette on black paper. 1931.
20 1/4x13 3/4 inches, 52x35 cm.
Condition A. Signed, inscribed and dated by the artist.
In addition to his strong, geometric graphic style, Kauffer was also a landscape painter (there were two exhibitions of his paintings in 1931 and 1933). A small group of posters he designed for Shell in the early 1930s reflect his ability to apply modernist, graphic design elements to classical landscapes. The results are a dark, mysterious and even surrealistic presentation of recognizable British landmarks. Inscribed "To M. from T. / E. McKnight Kauffer," a label on the back of the frame suggests that the "M" is Marion Dorn, the influential rug and textile designer and Kauffer's wife. Shell 32 (var), Weill 414 (var), Voyage p. 48 (var).
